The SPLOST VI committee held their first meeting earlier this month. The committee next meets on Tuesday in Locust Grove.

The general public is encouraged to attend SPLOST committee meetings. There, they can offer input about which projects the county should fund in its next SPLOST program.

About SPLOST VI and the Committee

Henry County, like most counties in Georgia, has a one-percent sales tax for capital projects. This sales tax must be renewed by voters every five to six years. Henry County voters last approved the tax, its fifth iteration, in 2019. The county plans on asking voters this November to renew it for a sixth program.

Proceeds from the sales tax, referred to as SPLOST, must be spent on capital projects. This includes park improvements, transportation projects and public safety upgrades. Projects can also include constructing or renovating county buildings and buying new vehicles.

The county has appointed a citizen committee to consider projects for SPLOST VI. The committee consists of one appointee by each county commissioner, and the county manager. They will meet seven times this winter. When finished, they will recommend a SPLOST project list to the board of commissioners. The BOC may alter or amend the list before adopting a final project list this summer. The voters will then consider whether to approve it in November.
