Georgia DOT has announced an upcoming closure of I-75 exit 218 at state route 20 in McDonough. The weekend closure is part of ongoing construction for the diverging diamond interchange.

I-75 Exit Closure

The weekend closure is scheduled for Friday, June 24, starting at 9 pm through 5 am on Monday morning, June 27. The closure will allow contractors to complete the crossover for the interchange. The exit will operate as a diverging diamond interchange when it reopens.

The entrance and exit ramps will remain open during the closure. The bridge over I-75 will close. Motorists will not be able to drive across the bridge, but can enter or exit the interstate from either side.

The official detour route involves utilizing I-75 North or South to travel one exit, turn around then travel back to state route 20. Local traffic may find local alternatives. Other McDonough area options to cross I-75 include Jonesboro Road, Mt. Carmel Road and state route 155.

Moving Henry Forward will share any updates if the closure date changes.

What is a DDI?

Diverging diamond interchanges utilize a “crossover” where motorists drive on the opposite side of the road while driving across the bridge. They cross-over to the left-hand side of the road at the first traffic light of the exit before crossing back at the signal on the other side. This allows motorists turning left either on or off the interstate to make their turn without going in front of opposing traffic. DDIs have proven successful at improving operations and reducing accident rates at locations both in Georgia and nationwide.
