Commissioner Kevin Lewis Shares A District 5 Update

District 5 Commissioner Kevin Lewis shared a June 2023 update on Wednesday about upcoming capital projects. They include a variety of road projects and new recreation facilities.

Commission district 5 represents portions of Hampton, Dutchtown and McDonough. Kevin Lewis was first elected to represent it in November 2022.

District 5 Update June 2023

Commissioner Lewis shared his district 5 update with the Council for Quality Growth at the Henry County Chamber of Commerce. The Council is an association of development industry stakeholders focused on metro Atlanta.

Lewis said he is excited for the upcoming improvements being made in the district for residents. “These are great improvements we have upcoming, and we want to ensure that we are planning improvements to better accommodate our residents,” said Lewis.

Road Improvements

Improvements on the horizon fall into one of two categories: road improvements and new recreation facilities. Upcoming road projects include the following:

  • widen Mill Road between Jonesboro Road and Peachtree Peddler’s Flea Market,
  • dirt road pave Dutchtown Road from Jonesboro Road to Mt. Carmel Road,
  • extend Flippen Road between McCullough Road and Jonesboro Road at North Mt. Carmel Road, to include a new connection with the Dutchtown School cluster, and
  • widen Jonesboro Road between I-75 and North Mt. Carmel Road.

In addition, district 5 includes the Georgia 20 widening now under construction. The project extends between I-75 and Phillips Drive. It has an estimated construction completion date in spring 2025. When complete, the roadway will have four lanes with a sidewalk and multiuse path on either side. Finally, road projects include resurfacing about fifteen roads.

Recreation Facilities

Secondly, Commissioner Lewis spoke on new recreation facilities coming soon. They include the Henry County Aquatic Center and North Mount Carmel Recreation Center. Henry County also held a ribbon cutting this month for the new Nash Farm Park Pavilion. Other improvements, like a greenhouse, are in the planning stages.

Henry County is presently accepting construction proposals for the new aquatic center. Construction could begin as early as this fall. They expect the new venue to open by Memorial Day 2025.

The new recreation center is currently in plan reviewal. The county hopes to accept construction bids soon. It will be located at North Mt. Carmel Park.
