Henry County is presently holding meetings to discuss the SPLOST VI program. Staff have estimated the sales tax program could generate up to $470 million dollars. This leaves the question where should the county focus its dollars?
The SPLOST program can pay for a variety of projects. Examples include new parks and park upgrades, county buildings like fire stations, and county vehicles. The program can pay for transportation projects such as major road projects, intersections, road resurfacing, sidewalks and trails.
SPLOST VI Revenue Projections
The SPLOST VI committee met in Locust Grove on January 23. There, county staff provided SPLOST VI revenue projections. They shared the following:
- A five-year program could generate $380 million dollars, or
- A six-year program could generate $470 million dollars.
Such estimates are based on 7–8% growth in annual collections. The county collected $59.4 million in 2023. One year prior, they collected $57.5 million. This amounts to a 3.3% growth rate year-over-year.
Whether the program spans five or six years depends on the county and cities. The parties must approve an intergovernmental agreement to ask voters for a six-year program. In 2019, the county and cities were unable to come to an agreement. For this reason, SPLOST V covers only five years.
Before Henry County receives SPLOST VI revenues, it requires voter approval. The voters will consider this November whether to renew the local sales tax. The current program, SPLOST V, is set to end in 2025.
