In today’s Henry Minutes, I cover the upcoming special election for district III, Hampton held the first vote on a new rezoning request and the city has a roundabout under construction. Henry Minutes is a collection of news from around Henry County.

District III Special Election

Residents in commission district III have a special election on Tuesday, June 15. Polls will be open from 7 am to 7 pm.

The election is to succeed Gary Barham who passed away earlier this year. The winning candidate will represent district three until December 31, 2022.

Three candidates qualified for the race. They include the following:

  • Charles “Greg” Cannon (R)
  • Briana Clay (D)
  • Sarita Dyer (D)

As of Friday afternoon, 2,267 ballots were cast in the election. District III has roughly 38,000 registered voters. Voters can check their polling place or verify their district by visiting the My Voter Page.

Minter Drive Development

The Hampton city council met on Tuesday, June 8. During their meeting, they considered a new rezoning request off Minter Drive. The applicant is also seeking annexation of 134 +/- acres.

The project is proposing 713 housing units. It includes the following:

  • single-family detached homes,
  • townhomes,
  • apartments, and
  • commercial / retail space.

The council unanimously approved the first reading of the request. They stipulated a workshop and second public meeting must be held about the request.

Because of the project’s size and scope, it requires a development of regional impact (DRI) review. City staff will submit the information to the state. The Atlanta Regional Commission must complete their review before the council can consider final action on the request.

Hampton Roundabout

The city of Hampton is installing a new roundabout south of town. The project is located at East King Road and Floyd Road.

During the May council meeting, the city council approved two agreements for developer contributions to the project. Both Jim Chapman Communities and Hampton Floyd LLC will contribute $250,000 each for the project. The two developers proposed new subdivisions in early 2020. The council subsequently rezoned both properties.

The roundabout will help facilitate car traffic from the new projects as well as the existing Cobblestone Ridge subdivision.
