Locust Grove will swear-in its new mayor and council members on Monday, November 18. The city will also host its first council meeting since August. The meeting starts at 6 pm. It will be at the city’s public safety building.

Locust Grove New Mayor

The city held a special election this month for mayor and city council. Mr. Carlos Greer won the election to be mayor. Mr. Greer will now lead the city until December 2027.

Mr. Greer has the distinction to be the city’s first African-American mayor. He previously served nine years on the city council before his election.

In addition, the city had two seats on the city council to fill. This is because Greer and Vincent Williams had to resign their council seats to run for mayor. Mrs. Olivia McCornell and Mr. Lester Clark won those elections. They will serve terms ending in 2027 and 2025, respectively.

The city will swear-in the new elected officials on Monday, November 18. Immediately thereafter, the city will hold a council meeting.

November 18 Council Meeting

The Locust Grove city charter requires either the mayor or mayor pro temp AND four council members to be present to hold a meeting. This thus requires at least five members. Since August, the city has had only four elected officials. For this reason, the city council has not held a meeting in three months. November 18 will be their first meeting since August 5.

The city typically meets twice monthly. They meet on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month. The meeting during the middle of the month is considered a workshop meeting. There, they consider any public hearing items. Department directors also provide monthly reports.

There are no public hearing items this month. Agenda items include the council’s 2025 meeting schedule. In addition, the city attorney has a couple legal updates. They pertain to statewide legislative activity.

Finally, the meeting at the start of the month is the regular meeting. At such time, the council considers action on items carried over from the previous month’s workshop. Any action items brought forth on Nov. 18 would be up for council consideration on Monday, December 2, for example.
