Henry County has various road projects in progress, paid for by SPLOST and Georgia DOT. Here are the latest updates on Henry County road projects as of November 2024.
The county’s transportation advisory group meets quarterly. Henry County staff shared these updates with the committee on Monday, October 28.

Major Road Projects & Road Widening Projects
SPLOST V
- Flippen Road extension, between Jonesboro Road at North Mt. Carmel Road, Dutchtown Schools and Stratford Circle – Construction bid awarded to Southeastern Site Development in April 2024. Construction in progress.
- Fairview Road widening, between Home Depot and Hearn Road – final plans are in review; utility coordination in progress.
T-SPLOST
- State Route 81 widening, phase I, between Postmaster Drive and Bethany Road – Right of way acquisition is about 55% complete. Final field plan review (FFPR) conducted on October 18, 2024. Estimated construction let date moved from May 2025 to late 2025.
- Bill Gardner Parkway widening, between I-75 and state route 155 – Right of way acquisition is about 15% complete.
- Jonesboro Road widening, between Mill Road and North Mt. Carmel Road – Right of way acquisition is about 20% complete..
- Mill Road widening, between Jonesboro Road and Peachtree Peddler’s Flea Market – Right of way acquisition is about 45% complete.
- McDonough Parkway, north segment, between state route 42 and state route 155 – Construction bid awarded to Southeastern Site Development in April 2024. Notice to Proceed issued on July 15; clearing in-progress.
- Rock Quarry Road widening, between SR 138 and Eagles Landing Parkway – Construction bid date planned for January 2025.
- Fairview Road widening, between Hearn Road and SR 155 – Right of way acquisition started this fall; staking completed in late October.
Other Projects
- State Route 81 widening, phase II, between Bethany Road and Keys Ferry Road – RFP for design firm / engineering work in negations with highest-scoring firm.
- Mill Road widening, phase II, between Peachtree Peddler’s Flea Market and state route 81 – design contract awarded to Transystems on June 25. Design Notice to Proceed issued on July 22.
Check out our project map for major road projects! The voters’ recent approval of SPLOST VI includes several new road widening projects. Those projects should begin design work in 2025.
Georgia DOT Projects
Projects Under Construction Now or Coming Soon
- State Route 20 / 81 widening, between I-75 and Phillips Drive – Construction began in March 2023; estimated completion date is in May 2025.
- State Route 42 widening, between I-675 and SR 138 – Construction began in October 2023; estimated completion date is in August 2027.
- State Route 42 widening, between Bill Gardner Parkway and Peeksville Road – Construction began in November 2022; project is now complete.
- Western Parallel Connector, a new four-lane road between Hudson Bridge, Jodeco and Jonesboro Roads – construction award approved in July 2024; estimated completion date is in November 2026.
- SR 81 at New Morn Drive – construction bid approved in September 2024. Notice to proceed issued on October 2, 2024; estimated completion date is August 2026.
- State Route 20 resurfacing, between I-75 and Lower Woolsey Road – construction bid approved in October 2024; estimated completion date is August 2025.
- SR 20 at McGarity Road & Lawrenceville Street – project will construct dual roundabouts at the two intersection; estimated construction bid date delayed to 2025.
Pre-Construction Projects
- State Route 42 widening, between SR 138 and Downtown McDonough – the project is in design. Right of way acquisition is scheduled for 2027–28 and construction is scheduled to start in 2030.
- State Route 155 widening, between I-75 and SR 42 – the project is in design. The project has recently started right of way acquisition and construction is scheduled to start in late 2027.
- SR 155 widening, between I-75 and Hampton-Locust Grove Road – concept development is in progress. Concept report submission is expected in the 3rd quarter of 2025. Right of way funding is in FY 2028, and construction is budgeted in 2030.
- SR 42 Bridge Replacement over Norfolk Southern Railroad, near Harris Drive – construction budgeted in FY 2026.
- I-75 Commercial Vehicle Lanes, between I-475 / Macon and McDonough – construction estimated to start in 2026 and conclude by 2031.
- I-75 Express Lanes Expansion, between I-675 and SR 155 – project announced in July 2024; engineering work next.
- New I-75 Exit at Bethlehem Road – design plans presented in April 2023. Right of way acquisition scheduled to start in 2025 and construction is estimated to start in 2026.

- Airline Road at McGarity – right-of-way in progress (4 of 5 parcels acquired).
- Jodeco Road at Oak Grove – Temporary signal bid opening on September 25, Reedwick is presumed awarded contractor, pending BOC approval.
- East Lake Road at Airline – Temporary signal bid opening on September 25, Reedwick is presumed awarded contractor, pending BOC approval.
Dirt Road Paving
- Dutchtown Road – construction bids in progress, due on November 20.
- Burg Road – construction bids in progress, due on November 20.
- Knight Drive – board approved construction in September 2024. Notice to proceed issued on October 28.
Road Resurfacing & Sidewalk Projects
- LMIG 2023 & 2024 Road Resurfacing – Construction bid awarded to MHB Paving. Notice to Proceed issued on April 21, 2024. Project is 90% complete.
- 2024 Road Resurfacing Contract 2 – Construction contract awarded to Blount Construction Company in June 2024. Notice to Proceed issued on August 18, 2024. Project is 25% complete.
- Fairview Road sidewalks, between Anvil Block Road and the DeKalb County line – Construction bid approved in September 2024. Pre-construction meeting held on October 25.
