Georgia DOT is installing a new turn lane at State Route 81 and Oakland Road. The state announced work has begun as of Thursday, September 12. The contractor will have sixty days to complete the work.

The new turn lane is a quick response project by Georgia DOT. The state allocated $155 thousand for the project.

Oakland Road Turn Lane

The state project will construct a new right-hand turn lane at State Route 81 and Oakland Road. This is located between McDonough and Hampton. Oakland Road is a common secondary road for motorists between SR 81 and SR 20.

The state department of transportation shared a post about the project on Facebook on Thursday, September 12. They advised there will be intermittent lane closures during the construction. All work should be complete by November.

The state’s quick response program supports small projects costing up to $200,000. Some examples of projects include constructing a new turn lane or mini roundabout. Within Henry County, other recent quick response projects have been the new traffic signal at SR 42 and Bethlehem Road, and extending the turn lane at SR 155 and Avalon Pkwy.

The state has an online comment form where residents can suggest potential quick fix projects.

Other Projects on SR 81

In August, Georgia DOT approved a construction contract for SR 81 at New Morn Drive. That project will construct a new roundabout. Its estimated completion date is August 2026.

Closer to McDonough, Henry County Schools is building a new bus transportation facility. It is off Nail Drive behind Oakland Elementary School. The new garage will be complete in spring 2025. Ahead of its anticipated opening, Henry County Commissioner Kevin Lewis has collaborated with the county DOT to resurface the county’s portion of Nail Drive. This is from state route 81 to the McDonough city limits.

There are no current plans to modify the intersection, SR 81 at Nail Drive. Any changes would first require the state DOT’s approval since the intersection is on a state route.
