Georgia DOT announced on Friday, August 30, they approved a construction contract for SR 16 at England Chapel Road in Butts County. The project will construct a new roundabout.

The state DOT accepted construction bids in August 2024 for the project. Preliminary engineering and design began in 2019.

Georgia DOT received eight bids to construct the new roundabout. E.R. Snell Contractor, Inc. of Snellville, GA submitted the lowest bid valued at $3,558,670.44. They received the build contract.

Road work should start this fall. It typically begins about two to three months after the contract award. The project’s contract completion date is May 31, 2026.

The state proposed the project to reduce the frequency and severity of crashes at the intersection. Between February 2015 and February 2020, a total of 47 crashes occurred at the intersection, according to the state. These crashes resulted in one fatality, 13 serious injuries, six visible injuries, and 27 property damage only collisions. The Federal Highway Administration identifies roundabouts as a proven safety countermeasure because of their ability to reduce the type of crashes that result in injury or loss of life.

Georgia DOT held a virtual open house about the project in spring 2023. The online portal remains available for residents to view.

Other Butts County Projects

The SR 16 at England Chapel Road roundabout is the third state transportation project approved this year in Butts County. Others include the following:

Building a new roundabout at SR 16 and SR 42 began in May 2024. The project is located on the west end of downtown Jackson. It has a July 2025 estimated completion date.

In July 2024, the state announced a contract award for the State Route 36 Connector project. The $10.5 million dollar project will construct a new road, and two roundabouts, to better align SR 36 through downtown Jackson. Its estimated completion is in summer 2026.
