Georgia DOT has approved resurfacing for a section of I-285 in Cobb and Fulton Counties. The project should begin work in fall 2024 and conclude by next fall 2025.
The I-285 resurfacing extends between Paces Ferry Road and Long Island Drive for a distance of 6.1 miles.
I-285 Resurfacing 2024
Georgia DOT accepted construction bids in July 2024 for the I-285 resurfacing. They received three bids for the project. The state announced its contract award on Friday, August 2.
E.R. Snell Contractor, Inc. of Snellville, GA received the contract award. Their bid was valued at $29,884,695.55. The project’s contract completion date is October 31, 2025.
The resurfacing extends from Paces Ferry Road / exit 18 to west of Long Island Drive, near exit 24 / Riverside Drive. The project covers 6.146 miles in length. The contractor is limited to overnight hours to complete the resurfacing work. In addition, they cannot close lanes between three hours before up to two hours after Braves home games. Lastly, the contract allows three weekends with continuous lane closures. They must coordinate these weekends in advance with Georgia DOT, and avoid holiday weekends.
When construction starts, Georgia DOT will share about upcoming lane closures. They publish a weekly weekend report advising of lane closures in metro Atlanta. The public can view all scheduled weekend lane closures at http://www.dot.ga.gov/ds/metrolaneclosures. The page is available beginning Thursday afternoon at 4 pm until Monday at 10 am each week.
E.R. Snell is underway now with another I-285 resurfacing project. It stretches between Ashford-Dunwoody and Henderson Mill Road. Work started in February, and the project has an estimated completion date this November.
This summer, Georgia DOT announced they completed the resurfacing of I-285 within the I-285 / Georgia 400 project limits. The major interchange reconstruction began in 2017. The project expects to be complete this November.
Future Work on I-285
Finally, Georgia DOT has plans to repair the west side of I-285. They have a project scheduled to start construction in summer 2025. It covers seven miles between Collier Drive (just north of I-20) and Paces Ferry Road. The future project will not only resurface the interstate, but also replace the shoulders and concrete median barrier. Corrections to the road’s cross slope are also included. The latest cost estimate is $195 million. More information about that project is available on the state website.
Looking long-term, the state plans to construct express lanes along the top-half of I-285. Georgia DOT held a series of open houses in July about the future express lanes.
