Henry County will be starting a new bus route between McDonough and Stockbridge in 2025. The county has a survey open until June 30 for its local bus stop design study.
The county’s transit master plan, completed in 2021, recommended Henry County start a local bus route. The county received a federal grant in 2022 to cover the route’s first three years of operating expenses.
Bus Stop Design Survey
Henry County proposed a bus stop design study, to complement the upcoming bus route, in spring 2023. The county was selected to receive federal funds for the study later that same year. Henry County hired Sizemore Group, LLC to complete the study. They began the study in December 2023; it has an estimated completion date in January 2025.
The study is looking at bus stop design, and how to incorporate local art into the bus stops. It is also considering how the county can install pedestrian improvements near bus stops. The survey is asking for public feedback about the bus stops. It is open until June 30.
Whether the county should offer transit service is not the question being asked by the survey. The county gathered feedback about public transit in 2020–2021 for the transit master plan (PDF link – 407 pages). Prior to then, the county completed a transit feasibility study in 2016. It recommended a similar bus route.
About the Bus Route
The transit master plan considered seventeen possible bus routes. It recommended the county implement route LB-17 first. The route will connect Stockbridge and McDonough.
Specifically, the route runs along Jonesboro Road, Foster Drive and Oak Grove Road, Jodeco Road, Patrick Henry Parkway and Rock Quarry Road, and, finally, North Henry Blvd. The bus route connects downtown McDonough, Piedmont Henry Hospital and downtown Stockbridge. Other points of interest are on the map above.
Community Workshop
The bus stop study held its first community workshop in April. The plan will hold a second community workshop on Tuesday, July 16. It will be at McDonough High School at 6 pm. During the hands-on workshop, attendees will design and discuss concepts for three bus stop locations. Those interested can RSVP by July 12 to attend.
