A major resurfacing contract will result in overnight work for a key section of Interstate 75 during the remainder of 2024 and into next year. Georgia DOT approved a resurfacing contract for six miles of I-75 between downtown Atlanta and Hartsfield-Jackson Airport.

Road work is limited to overnight and weekend hours. Work should begin later this summer and conclude in mid-2025.

Interstate 75 Resurfacing 2024

Georgia DOT approved a construction contract on May 31, 2024 for I-75 resurfacing. The maintenance work extends for 6.292 miles. The project limits are between I-285 / mile 238 and University Avenue / exit 244.

The state accepted construction bids for the project in May 2024. Two contractors submitted bids. CW Matthews Contracting Co., Inc. of Marietta, GA, had the low bid. They submitted a bid valued at $43,398,395.52.

On a per-mile basis, this equates to $6.9 million per mile. Interstate 75 is between 10–14 lanes wide in the vicinity. There are also collector-distributor lanes parallel to the mainline interstate in several locations.

The project completion date is July 31, 2025.

Work Hours

The project work hours are limited to overnight and weekends. Specifically, the contractor may close lanes during the below hours:

  • 9 pm to 5 am on weeknights, and
  • 9 pm on Friday evening through 5 am on Monday morning.

The contractor may close up to four lanes as necessary to safely perform the work. A double, triple or quadrupole lane closure may not begin until 10 pm on Friday evening for weekend work. A 9 o’clock start time applies on weeknights.

A couple ”fun facts” about the project are it will require an estimated 17,668 raised pavement markers, and eight-thousand hours of work zone law enforcement presence. There must also be twenty changeable message boards placed throughout the project limits to advise motorists of work hours.

When construction starts, Georgia DOT will share about upcoming lane closures. They publish a weekly weekend report advising of lane closures in metro Atlanta. The public can view all scheduled weekend lane closures at http://www.dot.ga.gov/ds/metrolaneclosures. The page is available beginning Thursday afternoon at 4 pm until Monday at 10 am each week.
