The Georgia DOT has issued the Notice to Proceed to start construction on a new roundabout in downtown Jackson. It will be at Georgia 16 and Georgia 42 on the west end of town.
The state approved the project’s construction bid in April 2024. The estimated completion date is summer 2025.
Georgia 16 at Georgia 42 Roundabout
The state transportation department began planning in 2017 for an intersection improvement at Georgia 16 and Georgia 42 in Jackson. They opted to install a roundabout to improve safety. According to the state DOT, the intersection did not meet the warrants for a traffic signal.
The new roundabout will measure 100’ in diameter. The state previously described this as a compact roundabout. During the design phase, they considered a larger 120’ diameter roundabout; however; the state ruled it out because of greater right of way impacts.
The state accepted construction bids for the project until March 22, 2024. Seven contractors submitted bids. Summit Construction & Development, LLC of Stone Mountain, GA, was the low bidder. Construction costs are $2,749,323.67.
Georgia DOT issued the Notice to Proceed, giving the contractor the go-ahead to start construction, on May 16, 2024. The contract completion date is July 31, 2025. The state’s project webpage is available here.
2023 Bid Award
The state DOT originally placed the project out for bid in April 2023. MHF News reported this at the time when the state approved a contract award. That contract was subsequently cancelled on December 1, 2023.
Jackson SR 36 Connector
Georgia DOT accepted construction bids last month to construct a new road in downtown Jackson. The new two-lane road would re-align state route 36. When complete, truck traffic and other motorists on SR 36 would no longer be required to go through the town square. In addition, the project will construct two roundabouts. They are at the new road’s intersections with Brownlee Road and the library / College Street.
The Butts County Board of Commissioners offered its support for the project, following three years of discussion with the state, in June 2023.
The state received eight bids to construct the new roadway. The low bid was $10.5 million. As of the time of writing, June 15, 2024, Georgia DOT has not yet approved a construction contract. If they approve it, then the estimated construction timeframe will be two years.
SR 16 at England Chapel / High Falls Road
Finally, Georgia DOT has one other upcoming project within Butts County. They plan to construct a new roundabout at Georgia 16 and England Chapel / High Falls Road. Presently, the project is on schedule to accept construction bids in August 2024.
The state held a project open house, offering a look at the concept layout, in spring 2023. Check out our article from it here.
