In unexpected news, Georgia DOT has cancelled plans for a roundabout at State Route 16 East and 42 in Butts County. The project would have been in front of the Piggly Wiggly grocery store in Jackson.

The state released an open house for the project in April. An update came out on Wednesday, May 10, with the following:

“This notification is to inform you that Georgia Department of Transportation has cancelled the [SR 16 East at SR 42 project] and will not pursue the previously proposed intersection improvements at this time.

Again, thank you for your comments.”

The project open house has been updated with a similar message. Additional info is not available as to why the sudden change.

SR 16 at 42 Roundabout

Despite the project cancellation, another roundabout at SR 16 and 42 is still happening. This project is on the west end of Jackson, near the county admin building.

Georgia DOT announced a contract award last Friday, May 5, to build the new roundabout. Helix Group, Inc. of Fairburn received the build contract. Their bid amount was $2.9 million. The contract completion date is March 31, 2025.

Two other roundabouts within the county — SR 16 at Higgins Road and SR 42 at US 23 — are presently under construction. Future plans call for additional traffic circles at SR 16 and High Falls Road, and SR 42 at Burg Road. Those projects have fall 2024 and fall 2025 estimated construction dates, respectively.
