Georgia DOT invites the public to an open house this Tuesday, December 6, to learn more about the future widening of state route 81 in McDonough. Residents may drop into the open house anytime between 4 and 7 pm.

The state route 81 open house will take place at the county admin building located at 140 Henry Parkway in McDonough.

State Route 81 Open House

The state route 81 widening extends between Postmaster Drive and Bethany Road. The project will expand the current two-lane roadway to a four-lane road. In addition, there will be a sidewalk and multiuse path on either side of the road.

During the open house, residents can view the project concept layout. Staff from Georgia DOT will also be on-hand to help answer any questions. Finally, residents can submit their comments during the open house. There is no formal presentation and residents may drop in anytime from 4 to 7 pm.

For those unable to attend the in-person meeting, there is also an online open house available. The materials online are the same as those presented in-person. The online open house is available below:

Residents can submit comments about the project online until Tuesday, December 20, 2022.

Project Schedule

Henry County initiated the design process for this project in 2016. It is nearing the completion of final design. After such time, right of way acquisition can begin. This will tentatively begin in spring 2023. Following its conclusion, construction will follow. Presently, construction is anticipated to begin in 2025.

A combination of federal and local dollars are paying for the project. Henry County SPLOST IV, SPLOST V and T-SPLOST have or will contribute to project costs.
