Earlier this week, the Henry County School Board approved its 2022 school bus purchase. The new buses will arrive in May and be ready to go before the 2023–2024 school year.

The education SPLOST VI program includes funds to buy 125 new school buses. Voters approved the five-year program during spring 2021. This year marks the second of five annual purchases.

2022 School Bus Purchase

This year’s school bus purchase consists of twenty-six vehicles. They all will have air conditioning. Vehicles include the following:

  • Seventeen 72-passenger buses
  • Nine 48-passenger special needs with lift buses

Henry County will purchase the buses from Yancey Bus Sales of Atlanta, GA. Yancey Bus Sales has the state contract for school bus sales. This allows local school districts to buy buses at a fixed price without having to bid out the purchase.

The total purchase price equals $3.632 million. From which, state grants will cover about $1.1 million of the cost. This leaves $2,535,910.00 payable through education SPLOST.

The seventeen 72-pax buses will run off propane. This continues a transition by Henry County to alternate fuel sources for the bus fleet. The smaller buses remain gas-powered.
