Commissioner Greg Cannon resigned from the Henry County Board of Commissioners effective immediately, February 1, 2022. Cannon announced his resignation at the start of the monthly board meeting.
Commissioner Cannon read a prepared statement when announcing his resignation. He described an inability to serve the community because of a lack of dialogue among board members. He also shared he found politics was affecting the board’s ability to adequately serve Henry County and conduct business. For these reasons, he resigned from the board.
Commissioner Cannon was first elected in 2021 following the passing of Commissioner Gary Barham. He represented commission district III. District III consists of McDonough east of I-75 as well as portions of the Ola and Union Grove communities. Northern limits of the district generally follow Jodeco Road and East Lake Parkway. Southern limits generally follow state route 20 in McDonough then state route 81 in Ola.
Appointment Process
Senate Bill 22, later amended by Senate Bill 306, provide for the process to fill a vacancy on the BOC. Both bills passed in the wake of Commissioner Barham’s passing last year. Because commission district III is up for election this year, the following applies:
- The political party that held the seat submits nominees for interim commissioner to the BOC. The Republican Party represented district III.
- The board of commissioners selects an interim commissioner from the list of nominees.
- The interim commissioner will serve the remainder of the year.
District III will appear on the 2022 ballot for a regular four-year term. Candidate qualifying for the seat occurs in March. The current vacancy does not affect the regular election.
