Henry County commissioners recently awarded the construction bid to expand Heritage Senior Center in McDonough. The SPLOST V project was planned by Commissioner Gary Barham before his passing.

The county awarded the design-build contract to J.R. Bowman Construction Co., Inc. of McDonough, GA. The contract value is $798,247.00.

Because of the ongoing pandemic, senior services offers limited operations. Meals on Wheels is making deliveries and some senior centers have drive-thru meal pick-up.

Senior Center addition

Commissioner Gary Barham budgeted $1 million dollars in SPLOST V for improvements at both Heritage Senior Center and Heritage Park. The senior center addition includes a new fitness room.

The scope of work includes a 40’ x 90’ addition (3,600 square feet) to the front of the building. The addition will feature an indoor walking track and workout equipment.

The existing senior center was built in 2000.

Capital Projects

During the commissioners’ March 9 meeting, the board also awarded contracts for smaller projects. The improvements are at Heritage Senior Center and Hidden Valley Senior Center.

The board awarded contracts for the following:

  • $83,993 to Chef’s Depot of Spring Valley, NY for new kitchen equipment at both senior centers
  • $30,982 to Holcomb Distributor, Inc. of McDonough, GA for the purchase and install of new carpet at Heritage Senior Center
  • $9,353 to Billiard Factory of Plano, TX for the purchase, delivery and set-up of two (2) new pool tables at Heritage Senior Center
  • $8,520 to The Man Cave of Norcross, GA for the purchase, delivery and set-up of two (2) new pool tables at Hidden Valley Senior Center

Capital project funds will pay for the items. The board approved the purchases during the consent agenda.
