A request for a conditional use permit to support the installation of an outdoor adventure park has been approved by the Henry County Board of Commissioners. The park, featuring zip lines and canopy tours, will be built at 1189 Iris Lake Road in McDonough.
The 141.4 +/- acre property is zoned RA (residential agriculture) and includes a twenty-two acre lake. WePartner, an Atlanta-based real estate firm, is planning the development in partnership with American Adventure Park Systems of Whitesburg, GA. AAPS operates several adventure parks within the state including courses at Amicalola and Unicoi State Parks in the north Georgia mountains.
The preliminary site plan for the property proposes zip lines over the lake, canopy tours through the forest (a series of connected zip lines), twenty rustic lodging units (cabins and tree houses), and the repurposing of two existing houses on the property. The two houses would be used as clubhouses, meeting space, office, and other supporting uses.
The zoning advisory board took no action on the request in May, causing the applicant to appeal to the BOC. Planning staff recommended approval of the request.
